A Trio Makes This Trio of a Golf Package
As golf designers go, the trio behind the three courses in the Sea Trails package represents some of the business’s heavy hitters. There’s the late Willard Byrd, who served aboard a minesweeper during World War II before going on to graduate with a degree in landscape architecture form North Carolina State in 1948. Over the next 50 years, he’d design more than 100 courses in the U.S. including 10 along the Grand Strand, Lions Paw and Indigo Creek being two of them.
There’s Dan Maples, the fourth generation son of a golf designer who designed his first course by the time he was six and was moving dirt for courses by the time he was 10. Maple’s Grand Strand courses include Sandpiper Bay, Willbrook, and Oyster Bay. And there’s Rees Jones, son of legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, who has designed more than 100 course since 1974, including some of the world’s most environmentally sensitive ones.
The Sea Trail Golf Courses
Sea Trail - Willard Byrd Course – A thinking man’s course, strategic tee shots are needed to be successful on this layout that features large lakes from 14-20 acres, hard doglegs, large bunkers, large undulating greens with extensive greenside bunkering and lots of water. Each of the course’s holes requires a decidedly different approach shot.
Sea Trail - Rees Jones Course – Featuring a straightforward traditional style with wide fairways, generous mounding and large elevated greens, water is in play on 11 of the course’s holes. In addition to the water hazards, there are many expansive bunkers as well as pot bunkers to add to the challenge. The Jones Course renovated greens in the Summer of 2016.
Sea Trail - Dan Maples Course – A relatively short and narrow course, this track winds through a Carolina pine forest with five holes along Calabash Creek. There’s water in play on 12 or more holes and undulating medium sized greens. There are also numerous waste bunkers throughout, one extending the full length of the fairway.
With a prime location in Sunset Beach and three unique courses, the Sea Trail Golf Resort & Convention Center is midway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, making it popular as a first or last stop for golfers flying in or out of airports in those cities. It’s also popular as an in-and-out golfing experience for golfers on tight schedules.
