About Bald Head Island Club (Smithville, NC)

Literally a world of golf unto itself, Bald Head Island Golf Course gives new meaning to the word unique. Reachable only by private boat or a 20-30 minute passenger ferry ride, the course is truly set apart on an island with no cars and only golf carts allowed.

Designed by George Cobb, the lead consultant of August National for more than 20 years, and “redesigned” by renowned golf course architect Tim Cate as part of a $4 million renovation in 2010, the course offers a golfing experience like no other.

An exclusive private course now open for limited play by the public, this 6,823 par-72 course winds along the ocean, over dunes, through a forest, and around lagoons with few houses to detract from the golfing experience. Improving on Cobb’s original design, Cate eliminated most of the course’s blind tee shots across the water as well as widening many of its fairways.

Other changes to the Bald Head Island golf course included elevating tees to provide better views of the surrounding Atlantic. Fourteen of the course's holes incorporate lagoons in their design and the course changes in elevation as much as 35 feet with 20-foot tall dunes as a backdrop to some greens. The course’s makeover also added native sand and other natural areas to reduce the areas needing mowing as a way of helping the course be in even greater harmony with the island’s environment.
