About Founders Club at St. James Plantation (Southport, NC)

A creation of golf course designed legend Pete Dye, the 18-hole Founders Club at St. James Plantation Golf Course in Southport, North Carolina, has been a coastal favorite since opening in 1991.

Originally known as the Gauntlet, the course plays along the Intracoastal Waterway and coastal marshes with many of the features for which Dye is famous (or infamous as the case may be) including Dye bulkheads, pot bunkers, contoured greens, multi-level fairways and forced water carries. Like the other three courses at St. James, this course is an Audubon certified bird sanctuary. The 7,033-yard course was remodeled in 2003 and given its new name, although anyone who’s ever played it will agree that The Gauntlet perhaps fits it better.

With five tees to accommodate players of any skill level, the course can also accommodate big hitters. But beware – the closer you get to the greens the tougher it gets with approach shots needing to be accurate or you’ll be watching your score go south. Most of the greens feature a high degree of undulation and are surrounded by drop-offs that shuttle any ball coming their way into water features or deep bunkers. When chipping, it’s often to an at least partly obscured pin with some of the course’s greens being 20 feet above the fairway.
