About Members Club at St. James Plantation (Southport, NC)

With 18 holes designed by PGA legend Hale Irwin and another nine by prolific designer Tim Cate, the 27-hole Member’s Club at St. James Golf Course masterfully incorporates the 200 acres of natural terrain on which it sets into a challenging golf course with wide fairways, pronounced elevation changes, well-bunkered medium-sized greens, and lots of sand and water.

It is an Audubon certified bird sanctuary like its two St. James sister courses. With its 18 original holes designed by Irwin, one of the few golfers to win three U.S. Opens, the Irwin front nine measures 3,401 yards from the back tees with the back nine measuring 3,486. Just like the golfer, the course he designed is a friendly design with wide fairways from the tees but challenges nearer the green from strategically placed water hazards and sand.

Also highly playable, the Cate nine features large bunkering and slopes around the greens. Like his courses in the Myrtle Beach area, this design includes pampas grass as one of its design elements. The Cate nine measures 3,415 yards. While there are a good many houses around the course, most are set back and don’t intrude upon the experience.

With three possible combinations of play between the nine-hole tracks, many regard the Irwin back nine and the Cate nine as the most challenging. Course amenities include a large clubhouse with restaurant, snack bar, pro shop and practice facility.
