The golf

Rick Robbins opened Colonial Charters in 1988 and it is the shortest course in this group, playing 6,427 yards to a par of 71 with a slope of 133 and a difficulty rating of easy. Length is not the defence here. The course runs through a housing community, and several reviewers found the routing hard to follow, describing the layout as scattered and noting a lack of clear markings between the first and tenth holes. One group said plainly that they would have struggled to navigate the course had they not been paired with a member. Greens are Tif Eagle.

The review record is the weakest in this batch and needs stating without softening. Across 122 reviews the average is 3.35. Thirty are five star and 26 are four star, so fewer than half of all reviewers rated the round well. Thirty-five sit at three stars, with 19 two-star and 12 one-star ratings behind them. The written complaints are strikingly consistent. Bare spots in the fairways come up in review after review, described variously as bare compacted soil throughout, many rough patches, and multiple bare areas. Hard bunkers are the second recurring theme. One reviewer called it a disappointing end to an otherwise satisfying stay, which captures the tone of the middling ratings better than any star average.

There is a positive side and it is worth reporting accurately. Staff earns real praise, both in the pro shop and in booking, with one reviewer naming a staff member who made their whole trip easy. Reviewers returning after a long gap liked the newer layout. Some rounds land on good conditions, with reports of very nice course and good condition and at least one golfer posting their lowest score of the week here. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and chipping green, though one reviewer noted the range being unavailable during their visit. Price is the honest selling point: nobody claims it is expensive, and the complaints are about turf rather than value.

Course was in poor condition. Bare compacted soil throughout the fairways. A disappointing end to an otherwise satisfying stay.

Reply from the courseHi Curt, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for filling out the post-trip survey. This information is very helpful to us, and we appreciate you taking the time to complete it. As for Colonial Charters, It looks like they do have a few issues with some bare spots coming out of Winter. In talking to Shaun when he booked everything, we did discuss it being a budget course to help keep cost down but I agree it's a bad way to end a trip I'm already talking to Shaun about your next trip to Myrtle Beach, so get me some dates and I'll start the process while Myrtle Beach is fresh in your minds.  Fall is already selling out and Spring 2026 as well is booking at a good pace already. It was a real pleasure working with Shaun. Stay in Touch

Needed some grass in places. You can tell it was put together from parts of two different courses. Greens needed to be rolled and were slow. Staff was friendly and helpful.

This course needs a lot of work. There was a lot of touring throught the housing community. There was little markings of where to go between the 1st and 10 holes.

Not expensive, but multiple bare spots throughout and hard bunkers. Also, not driving range did not make things any better.

Wasnt a well marked course for directions between the club house and the front and back side. No Driving range and the course had a lot of bad areas to hit from IE Roots etc.

Very confusing to find the #’s 1 and 10 tee boxes and then again to find the clubhouse when you’re done. You literally had to drive in the street through neighborhoods.

Course is good. Conditions were just ok. Could use some landscape work.

Cart path only disappointing. The greens were not in great shape. Need work and the tee boxes were very poor.

Wife and I had a fun time. Course had many ough spots and the layout seemed all over the place. Had we not been teamed up with a member, i don't think we could have navigated the course

Greens were fair. Many tee boxes mostly die and hard as a rock. Probably about a $35/round experience.
