Eagle Nest Golf Club

Eagle Nest is a 1971 Gene Hamm design in Little River, a traditional par 72 playing 6,901 yards from the back tees. It suits groups wanting a fair, manageable round rather than a slope 126 fight.

Why groups book it

What you are paying for at Eagle Nest Golf Club

The pedigree

Gene Hamm

A Parkland layout that opened in 1971 and plays to a par of 72 over 6,901 yards.

The test

Slope 126

126 slope across 6,901 yards, which is the sort of card most of the group can post a real number on.

The greens

Bermuda

Putting surfaces are Bermuda. The practice ground carries a chipping green and a driving range, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The verdict

The course

The golf at Eagle Nest Golf Club

Hamm laid this one out in 1971, and it still reads like a course from that era. Wide corridors, Bermuda greens, and a par 72 routing that asks for placement more than power. At 6,901 yards from the tips with a slope of 126, the numbers put it firmly in the moderate bracket, and the course is rated easy in the difficulty listings. The closing stretch is the part players remember. One reviewer called the last three holes exactly as advertised, which is a fair summary of a layout that saves its teeth for the end.

The review record across 229 rounds averages 3.71, and the split explains the number better than the number does. Sixty-one five-star and 79 four-star ratings make up the majority, but 58 golfers landed on three stars and 31 went two or lower. That is a course people either enjoy for the price or walk away from unimpressed. Conditioning is the dividing line. Positive reviews mention very good condition, beautiful greens and fairways, and one group liked it enough to play it twice in a row on the same trip. Negative reviews describe it as dry and dusty, in the poorest condition of three courses played, and one repeat visitor said the second round left him disappointed enough not to return.

Staff comes up repeatedly on the positive side, with friendly service one of the more consistent themes in the sampled language. Cart policy appears in the complaints, with at least one round played on paths only. Practice facilities are limited to a driving range and a chipping green, so anyone wanting a full warm-up including putting work should plan accordingly. The honest read is a solid traditional layout at a price point where expectations should be calibrated. Groups who go in expecting a manageable round on Bermuda grass tend to come away satisfied. Groups slotting it beside a premium track on the same trip are the ones most likely to write the two-star review.

Course was good,,renovating clubhouse so no ice, beer, grill, etc. Cart girls had ice and drinks,,front nine I bought 2 beers,, but back nine they same cart girls who sold me a couple beers and hour earlier all of a sudden insisted on and ID ( first I'm 72, obviously, second my ID was in the car, and third they just sold me beer) duh!!! Would even let one of the guys I'm playing with buy me a beer,,not brightest bulb in box but the golf was good
