Why groups book it

What you are paying for at Beachwood Golf Club

The pedigree

Gene Hamm

A Links Style layout that opened in 1968 and plays to a par of 72 over 6,844 yards.

The test

Slope 120

120 slope across 6,844 yards, which is the sort of card most of the group can post a real number on.

The greens

328 Bermuda

Putting surfaces are 328 Bermuda. The practice ground carries a driving range, a practice bunker and a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

Practice facilities cover the basics and then some, with a driving range, putting green and a practice bunker on site. The low slope and the accessible length make this a course a mixed group can get around without anyone losing a sleeve of balls, and the location on the main highway keeps it easy to reach from most North Strand accommodation.

The review record is both thin and unflattering. Only 18 reviews are logged and the average is 2.5, the lowest in this group by a clear margin. There is no star by star breakdown and no verbatim review language available, so it is not possible to say what specifically drove those scores, whether conditioning, service or something else. Eighteen reviews is a small sample and one bad stretch can dominate it, but a 2.5 average should not be brushed aside. Book Beachwood on price and accessibility rather than on reputation, and set expectations accordingly.

Had we played this first, the rating might have been a 4, but playing Myrtlewood Pine Hills first, there was no comparison. Good course but not in as good a shape.

Jeffrey, Hauppauge
April 2023

A typical Myrtle Beach course. It was fun to play. The conditions were so so, and the pace of play was slow.
