Links Style NC Border Public

Aberdeen Country Club

Aberdeen Country Club is a Tom Jackson links style layout from 1989 up near the North Carolina border in Longs. It suits groups who want a fair par 71 at a sensible price rather than a marquee name.

Why groups book it

What you are paying for at Aberdeen Country Club

The pedigree

Thomas Jackson

A Links Style layout that opened in 1990 and plays to a par of 71 over 6,672 yards.

The test

Slope 138

6,672 yards and a slope of 138. Enough teeth to be worth the tee time, fair enough that the whole group finishes with a card worth signing.

The greens

Tif Eagle

Putting surfaces are Tif Eagle. The practice ground carries a chipping green and a driving range, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The course

The golf at Aberdeen Country Club

Jackson opened Aberdeen in 1989 and the course still carries the links style label, playing to a par of 71 over 6,672 yards from the back with a slope of 138. That number is the honest part of the picture. The scorecard length reads as modest by Myrtle Beach standards, but the slope says the trouble is real once you leave the short grass, and the course is rated medium difficulty rather than punishing. The course record is 64, set by Jim Fellner.

One long time visitor put it plainly, noting the layout used to run 27 holes and that some penalty areas have since been removed, adding that it still has teeth and works well as a warmup track. That is a fair summary of what Aberdeen asks: keep the ball in play, respect the water and waste areas that remain, and the round stays in front of you. Greens are Tif Eagle. Practice facilities are limited to a chipping green and a driving range, so there is no putting green to roll a few before the first tee.

The reviews are the most useful thing here, and they are mixed. Across 525 ratings the average sits at 3.96, with 183 five star and 207 four star scores, but also 89 threes, 21 twos and 25 ones. Conditioning is the swing factor. Plenty of golfers describe the course as very well maintained and in good shape even through dry spells, while others report shaggy greens that made putting difficult, tee box damage, and a handful of greens they called unplayable. The second recurring complaint is service at the front end. Multiple reviewers single out the bag drop and starter staff as rude or arrogant, and slow pace of play appears often enough in the vocabulary to take seriously. Book it knowing that conditions vary by season and that the golf, not the greeting, is the reason to go. The rating spread is the honest summary: most people leave satisfied with the layout and the value, a meaningful minority leave annoyed by the greens or the pace, and almost nobody calls it a great day out on the strength of the service alone.

Played it years ago when it was 27 holes. They've simplified it somewhat by removing some of the penalty areas, but it still has teeth. Not a bad track and good warmup course.

Course was in decent shape. Some holes had damage on the tees. The starters were completely rude to my party and another party. They were very arrogant and spoke down to the players. I also asked if I could take a cart to my car so I didnt have to carry my clubs. They said no and that it was a course policy. So I went to my car and grabbed my clubs. Brought them over and they basically lifted them onto a cart, strapped them in and then stood there waiting for a tip, again, after being rude. We finish playing and I go to drop off the cart and walk my clubs to the car and they say I can drive out to my car and drop them off..?? Thought that was against club policy. The pro shop was great, but the condescending starters think they can speak poorly to people and take advantage of others kindness and it doesn’t matter. I’d never recommend this course to anyone simply because of the starters
