Why groups book it

What you are paying for at Crown Park Golf Club

The pedigree

Robbie Byers

A Parkland layout that opened in 2000 and plays to a par of 72 over 6,502 yards.

The test

Slope 127

127 slope across 6,502 yards, which is the sort of card most of the group can post a real number on.

The greens

Bermuda

Putting surfaces are Bermuda. The practice ground carries a chipping green, a driving range, a practice bunker and a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The course

The golf at Crown Park Golf Club

At 6,502 yards with a slope of 127 and an Easy difficulty rating, Crown Park is not trying to beat anyone up. Byers laid it out in 2001 on a quiet site inland from the beach, and one reviewer noted how secluded it feels with no houses around the course. Bermuda greens and a full practice setup, including a chipping green, driving range, practice bunker and putting green, make it a sensible warm up venue as well as a round in its own right. Reviewers who enjoyed it used simple language: a fun course, a very good course, a great layout with the shape of the course good.

The atmosphere is part of the pitch. One group specifically praised the absence of irritating course rules and protocols, along with reasonable pro shop prices, and called it a great experience overall. Another said it was the nicest course they played all week. When Crown Park is on, it delivers a comfortable day at a price point that makes sense inside a package.

The review record is the weakest in this group and deserves a straight reading. Across 274 reviews the average is 3.62. Only 63 golfers gave five stars against 97 at four, 76 at three, 24 at two and 14 at one, which means well over a third of reviewers rated it three or below. Slow play is the loudest theme, and the words extremely and slow both rank among the most common terms in sampled reviews. One golfer took more than three hours to play nine holes and could not finish before dark after a 1:18 tee time. Another described no starter and no marshal, with a very high handicap group ahead who had never heard of ready golf. Service complaints also appear more than once, including a rude bag drop attendant, rude staff and a dispute over a refund when a member of a group could not travel. Conditioning was called poor by some and wet after rain by others. Book it knowing the round may take a while.

We had an enjoyable time at Crown Park. The people were nice, and there were no irritating course rules and/or protocols to ruin the fun. Also, the prices at the pro shop were very reasonable. Overall, a great experience. This was our second time playing Crown Park. I'm sure we'll play there again.

This is one of my favorite courses, however, I was very disappointed in the greens. They are normally very nice. They needed cut badly. Probably won't go back next year.
