Why groups book it

What you are paying for at Diamondback Golf Course

The pedigree

Russell Breeden

A Pinehurst (Rolling Hills) layout that opened in 1999 and plays to a par of 72 over 6,644 yards.

The test

Slope 139

6,644 yards and a slope of 139. Enough teeth to be worth the tee time, fair enough that the whole group finishes with a card worth signing.

The greens

Jensen

Putting surfaces are Jensen. The practice ground carries a chipping green, a driving range and a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The verdict

The course

The golf at Diamondback Golf Course

Breeden opened Diamondback in 1999 and gave it a slope of 139 off 6,644 yards, which is the interesting part of the scorecard. That is a lot of resistance packed into a course that never asks for length. Reviewers describe it as tight more often than they describe it as long, and the phrase that comes up is tough little track. The Jensen greens and the corridors between the trees do the defending rather than raw yardage, so the tee shot decisions matter more here than the driver does.

The honest picture from 167 reviews is mixed. The average sits at 3.66, with 44 five star and 59 four star ratings against 38 threes, 16 twos and 10 ones. That spread is not the profile of a course everyone leaves happy with. Conditions drive most of the variation. On good days players report very good condition and perfect greens. On wet days the complaints are specific and repeated: fairways holding water, ground barely walkable let alone drivable, rounds dragging out. Rain shows up often enough in the review language to be a genuine planning factor rather than bad luck. One reviewer went further and criticised the operation itself, describing an attitude of opening the door and letting people play with maintenance postponed. Others in the same set praised the owners as nice and accommodating, so the service impression is not uniform either.

What is consistent is the layout. Even reviewers unhappy with conditioning tend to say the holes themselves are good and that they would come back. The practice side covers the basics with a driving range, putting green and chipping green, so a warmup before the round is available. The main caveat beyond weather is geography. Loris sits well inland from the Grand Strand and reviewers mention the drive without much affection. Diamondback is worth the trip when it is dry and it is a difficult sell after a heavy week of rain.

It's a tough little track....a little far out of town, but it's got some really good holes. I'll definitely plan on playing it again.

Best course we played. Only downside is the layout. Too short to hit driver for me but still a great track. The staff was very accommodating.

Great layout. Greens were okay. The wind made it tougher to play. Make sure you play the correct tees when you are here.
