Why groups book it

What you are paying for at Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club

The pedigree

Dan Maples

A Resort Style layout that opened in 1987 and plays to a par of 71 over 6,849 yards.

The test

Slope 121

121 slope across 6,849 yards, which is the sort of card most of the group can post a real number on.

The greens

Mini Verde Bermuda

Putting surfaces are Mini Verde Bermuda. The practice ground carries a chipping green, a driving range and a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The verdict

The course

The golf at Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club

Dan Maples opened Sandpiper Bay in 1987 and the course is listed as traditional in style, public in access, and hard in difficulty. The numbers give a clear enough sketch for planning purposes. Par is 71 and the back tees stretch to 6,849 yards, which is long relative to par and means the middle of the card includes some approach shots most amateurs will be hitting with more club than they would like. The slope of 121 is the number that complicates the picture. It sits below the area average and points to a course that is demanding through sheer length rather than through forced carries or severe angles.

The greens are Mini Verde Bermuda. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and chipping green, which matters at a course this long since a proper warm-up changes how the opening holes go. The address is 800 N Sandpiper Club Dr in Sunset Beach, placing it in the cluster of North Carolina border courses rather than in Myrtle Beach itself, so factor a drive into the morning.

Review evidence here is thin and should not be leaned on. Only seven reviews are on file, averaging 4.57, with four at five stars and three at four stars and nothing lower. That is a perfect record on paper, but a sample of seven says very little about how the course plays week to week, and the most recent of those reviews dates to April 2022. There is no body of written feedback to draw conditioning conclusions from, positive or negative. Rather than fill that gap with guesses, the honest position is that Sandpiper Bay has a well-regarded architect, a long traditional layout, and no recent verified reporting from golfers who have played it. If current conditioning is a deciding factor for your group, ask when you book rather than relying on the star rating.

Cool course. Would play again.

October 2025

A nice, forgiving course but with many interesting holes. The greens were in good shape and rolling medium speed. The fairways were good but needed to be cut about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch shorter. The facilities and staff were great!
