Why groups book it

What you are paying for at Pine Lakes Country Club

The pedigree

Craig Schreiner, Robert White

A Traditional layout that opened in 1927 and plays to a par of 73 over 6,675 yards.

The test

Slope 134

6,675 yards and a slope of 134. Enough teeth to be worth the tee time, fair enough that the whole group finishes with a card worth signing.

The greens

Sunday Bermuda

Putting surfaces are Sunday Bermuda. The practice ground carries a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The verdict

4.4 out of 5

Across 802 reviews left by golfers who booked through us, 88% scored Pine Lakes Country Club four stars or better. None of it is edited and none of it is paid for.

The course

The golf at Pine Lakes Country Club

Pine Lakes Country Club dates to 1927, which makes it the original course in Myrtle Beach and the reason the area calls it the Granddaddy. Robert White laid it out in a traditional style, and it plays to par 73 over a maximum of 6,675 yards with a slope of 134. Sunday Bermuda greens are the current putting surface. The course record of 62 belongs to Jay McAllister. Practice space is limited to a putting green, so anyone wanting to hit balls before the round will need to plan elsewhere.

The golf rewards position rather than raw distance. Reviewers describe greens with real character, and one summed up the balance well by noting that good shots are not punished even though the putting surfaces have movement. Layout, shape and condition are the words that recur most, alongside repeated mention of staff, who draw praise as consistently as the golf does. Friendly and excellent turn up throughout the sample. Several longtime visitors noted the course is in far better shape now than it was on earlier trips.

The ratings back that up without being flawless. From 837 reviews the average is 4.4, built on 501 five star and 235 four star scores. Against that sit 58 threes, 24 twos and 19 ones. Two specific complaints repeat. The first is aeration: multiple reviewers arrived to find greens recently punched and sanded and were unhappy they had not been told in advance. The second is pace. One group reported a six hour round with no marshals on the course. A separate complaint concerned rainchecks being issued instead of refunds for a washed out round for a large group. None of these touch the design, but they are worth knowing before booking a tee time in aeration season. It is also worth noting how recent the feedback is. The most recent review on file dates to July 2026, so the picture here is current rather than historical, and the volume of it makes the 4.4 average one of the more reliable numbers on the Strand. Par 73 is unusual for the area and gives the round a slightly different rhythm from the par 72 layouts most groups play the rest of the week.

The best. We try to play here every year. Only negative is there is no driving range but course layout and conditions more than make up for that.

April 2025

The course was in really good condition for the most part. Our group enjoyed the experience. No driving range and some other minor limitations but overall really good. Once again, the reason it is not a five is at the price point the value is average. Nevertheless, I would recommend the course.

Joseph, Bradenton

Michael, Unionville
March 2025

Enjoyed the course but it’s too busy. Way too many people one group after another other and mowers and groomers are everywhere

Scheidel, Bristol
March 2025

Great course. Staff was ok but treated my 13 year old like a small child so he was very off put. He plays hs and pga jr with a solid game and they were really pushy for him to play up. He shot an 86 from the #3 tees with me. Noteworthy for them to be conscious of their customers.

October 2024

The Granddaddy’s very nice. I wish the starter and marshal’s would stipulate to players to repair divots and ball marks on the greens. They seemed to have more than any other course we played. Otherwise it was impeccable.

Extra touches like clam chowder at the turn and attendant cleaning clubs

Pajak, Indiana
September 2024

Rained out. Could only get rainchecks not happy we couldn’t get refund, I paid you for 8 players at $137 each that’s almost $1,100, you should’ve refunded the money
