Why groups book it

What you are paying for at Myrtle Beach National - South Creek Course

The pedigree

Arnold Palmer

A Beach Style layout that opened in 1974 and plays to a par of 72 over 6,416 yards.

The test

Slope 128

128 slope across 6,416 yards, which is the sort of card most of the group can post a real number on.

The greens

Mini Verde

Putting surfaces are Mini Verde. The practice ground carries a chipping green, a driving range, a practice bunker and a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The course

The golf at Myrtle Beach National - South Creek Course

Palmer's 1975 design is the least demanding of the Myrtle Beach National trio, and the yardage says so. At 6,416 yards from the back tees it is the shortest course in this group by a clear margin, with a slope of 128 and an easy difficulty rating. Mini Verde greens, par 72, traditional routing. This is a course built for enjoyable golf rather than examination, and reviewers describe it in exactly those terms. Well kept, fun to play, not overwhelming.

The comparisons in the review language are telling. Golfers consistently rank South Creek against its siblings, calling it a definite step down from North and not as good as West while still describing it as a very good course. That relative framing is the most useful thing in the record. Nobody claims it is the best golf on the property, and plenty of people had a good time anyway. Across 590 reviews the average is 3.99, with 222 five-star and 216 four-star ratings carrying it.

The 56 reviews at two stars or below concentrate on two things. Drainage is the first. Multiple golfers describe mushy fairways and cart path only restrictions imposed days after the last rain, with one calling the course a swamp in dry weather. Bunkers with no sand appear in the same complaints. The second is service, including rude treatment at the bag drop, a hectic morning check-in, and maintenance crews working loudly through play without regard for golfers on the hole. Greens are described as inconsistent even in some otherwise positive reviews. Practice facilities are complete, covering range, putting green, chipping green, and a practice bunker, shared with the rest of the National complex. Value is the deciding factor. Groups who book it at a fair price generally leave content, and those paying premium rates are the ones writing the disappointed reviews. All three National courses share the same address on National Drive, so a group can play two of them across consecutive mornings without moving hotels or adding drive time to the schedule.

This was the worst course for more than one reason. The staff was rude at the bag drop. It was cart path only and a swamp even though it hadn't rained in days. The maintenance crew didn't move and talked loudly while you hit off a nonexistent fairway. 4-6 inches of water in many traps and when you ask the front desk about the course just shoulder shrugs and excuses. I will never play this course or the other MBN courses after this experience.

Evidently this course doesn’t drain well. Mushy fairways, sand traps with no sand, & a course worker on a tractor with a blower that had no regard for the players.

Jeff, Woodstock

Burning Ridge was good-some damaged fairways, founders was great - tees, fairways, greens exceptional, Myrtle Beach National - PHENOMENAL from arriving through entire round. My buddies from out of town said it was their best time ever on a three day golf outing. Thank you to all three clubs. I will be back. My first rounds since retiring in June and relocating from NJ.

MBN always provides a good experience; however, the bag drop/loading clubs/getting started was very chaotic as they seemed understaffed out front.

These were average courses I could have played anywhere and probably would pay $50 per round. Very disappointing considering there are so many beautiful courses in the area and the reason for choosing MB was for the golf.

Brendan, Mount Pleasant
