The Wizard Golf Links

A par 75 is unusual anywhere, and The Wizard is one of the few in Myrtle Beach. Dan Maples opened it in 1996 at 6,721 yards with a slope of 125, the friendliest scoring round in this group.

Why groups book it

What you are paying for at The Wizard Golf Links

The pedigree

Dan Maples

A Links Style layout that opened in 1996 and plays to a par of 75 over 6,721 yards.

The test

Slope 125

125 slope across 6,721 yards, which is the sort of card most of the group can post a real number on.

The greens

Bentgrass

Putting surfaces are Bentgrass. The practice ground carries a driving range and a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The course

The golf at The Wizard Golf Links

The par 75 is the headline. Three extra shots of par across 6,721 yards means a scorecard full of reachable holes and a slope of only 125, the lowest of the courses in this group. That combination is why reviewers who like it call it fun and why one noted it plays a bit short for long hitters. Maples used mounding and shaping rather than length, and the layout draws consistent praise as a nice track. Bentgrass greens set it apart from the Bermuda surfaces on many neighboring courses. Practice is limited to a driving range and putting green, with no chipping area.

Staff and conditioning carry most of the positive comments. One reviewer described the pro shop accommodating a group that arrived an hour late after being locked out of their rental. Others reported the course in great shape and in better condition than on previous visits. The words excellent, best and track all appear among the most common terms in sampled reviews, and one golfer flatly called it a must play.

The 412 reviews average 4.12, which is solid without being outstanding. The split is 179 five star, 143 four star, 59 three star, 22 two star and 9 one star, so around one in five golfers left less than satisfied. Greens are the sore point. One reviewer described them as being in terrible shape and the worst course in their package. Another said the course was not well maintained and the greens were still recovering, and would not play it again. A third liked the setup but found the greens substandard. Pace of play appears as a complaint alongside otherwise good conditions. And for some the course simply does not stick: one golfer called it the least favorite of their group and not very memorable, while another who had played it years earlier said it is not what it was fourteen years ago but still fun. Book it for the enjoyable round rather than the stern test.

Pro shop was very accommodating as we got locked out of our house that morning and we were an hour late arriving. Nice layout, although a bit short for the long hitters.

Great track, and forgiveness was appreciated given the lack of practice. Greens were difficult to read. Pin placement was done by a serious sadist.

Was a good course, we played it before and will probably play it next time.

Course was great. One green is hurting from fungus or something. Service was great besides not seeing the cart girl till the 17 hole. 8:36 tee time I believe would permit us seeing her least twice in the round.
