Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club

The pedigree
Clyde Johnston
A Parkland layout that opened in 2001 and plays to a par of 72 over 6,935 yards.
The test
Slope 140
A slope of 140 over 6,935 yards from the tips. The back tees are a genuine examination for a scratch player, and the forward sets keep everyone else moving.
The greens
Bermuda
Putting surfaces are Bermuda. The practice ground carries a driving range, a golf school and a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The course
The golf at Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club
The defining feature reviewers keep returning to is the raised greens. The advice repeated in the comments is to take an extra club into every approach, and players who work that out early tend to enjoy the round considerably more than those who do not. That single adjustment separates the reviews that call it a great scoring course from the ones that read as frustrated. Dustin Johnson holds the course record here at 62, which gives some sense of how low the layout can go when it is understood.

Across 933 reviews the average is 4.11, built on 392 five star and 342 four star ratings with 136 threes and 63 ratings at two stars or below. That is a solid record without being unanimous. Conditioning praise is frequent and specific, with repeated mentions of the course being in great shape and the fairways and greens holding up. The counterweight comes from two recurring gripes. The first is cart policy: several reviewers were held to the 90 degree rule on days they considered the course dry, and they were not quiet about it. The second is green speed, with multiple accounts of greens not cut or rolled and putting slowly as a result. A smaller group of reviewers simply did not warm to the layout, describing it as unimpressive and mentioning long sand trails as an unusual feature they did not enjoy.
Staff draw consistent praise, though one reviewer distinguished sharply between excellent outside staff and a less welcoming experience inside. The facility includes a driving range, putting green and a golf school, which makes it a reasonable place to start a trip if anyone in the group wants a lesson. It also plays shorter than most of the courses in the area, and one reviewer specifically chose it as the last day round for that reason. Alligators are a regular sighting on the property. Several reviewers call it their go to course in Myrtle Beach.

I love Shaftesbury. It’s my go to course in Myrtle Beach.
The course was amazing. Great scoring course. Outside staff was awesome, inside staff not so much.
Did not like the layout of the course.
Once you get used to the needed "extra" club for the raised greens your all set

Good facilities and course was in great shape
Shortest course which worked perfect for the last day of trip. Seen a few gators too!
Nice shape. All elevated greens. Rolled well
Staff was great
Great course. First time playing it and had a blast. Lots of sand fairway runouts and bunkers so you had to hit it straight off the tee to avoid the sand.
Great shape wonderful staff
A nice course, unfortunately it rained throughout most of our round.
Overall course conditions were just OK. Fairways lean, traps and green satisfactory. Out group was not impressed with the course layout.
Thought the lay out of the course was great, all the employees were fantastic , course just went under aeration which was a lot
Didn't play this day
Great layout, awesome greens. Overall conditions were superb, unfortunately we played with a little construction that interfered a bit. Great course
another hidden gem enjoyed layout and course in great shape
Excellent service
Course was good. Amenities and hospitality not nearly as good as Rivers Edge.
Great conditions, quiet, really loved the course. Good customer service.
Great course. Weather was chilly. My wife did not play, therefore I have a raincheck that I'll never use !
our groups favorite course.
Terrible because we could only drive 90 all day even though the course for the most part was dry. Greens were not cut or rolled and were very slow.
This was nice course the reason for the 3, when we got there wasn’t enough golf carts and had to wait 20 minutes for one.
very nice shape
great all around no complaints
90 deg rule all day even though the course was not wet. Greed were not cut so they were pretty slow.
nice course in very good condition. Misty rain all day. September is the rainy season. Everyone was very nice an professional. Long course for seniors. Nice outing with my adult grandson.
rain check to be mailed to my home as per the course contact
