What you are paying for at Wild Wing Plantation - Avocet Course
The pedigree
Jeff Brauer, Larry Nelson
A Links Style layout that opened in 1993 and plays to a par of 72 over 7,127 yards.
The test
Slope 132
7,127 yards and a slope of 132. Enough teeth to be worth the tee time, fair enough that the whole group finishes with a card worth signing.
The greens
Tif Dwarf
Putting surfaces are Tif Dwarf. The practice ground carries a driving range and a putting green, so the speed is no surprise on the first green.

The golf at Wild Wing Plantation - Avocet Course
The Avocet Course is the surviving layout at Wild Wing Plantation, opened in 1993 to a design by Larry Nelson and Jeff Brauer. It runs to 7,127 yards at par 72 over Tif Dwarf greens, and the slope of 132 with a medium difficulty rating is the key number. That combination of serious length and moderate slope points to a course that gives you space rather than one that punishes every miss, which is a genuinely useful profile for a mixed group.
Service is the strongest and most consistent theme in the reviews. Staff and friendly both rank among the most frequently used words, and reviewers repeatedly describe the team as helpful and the clubhouse and food as good. Beautiful is another recurring word, and several reviewers describe the course as well kept from tee to green. Practice covers a driving range and a putting green.
The split is solid rather than perfect. From 728 reviews the average is 4.22, with 346 five star and 257 four star ratings against 83 three star, 20 two star and 22 one star. That is about eight in ten reviewers at four stars or better, though the 42 combined one and two star reviews are not noise. Greens are the source of nearly all of the negatives. One reviewer described them as the worst he had seen and objected to paying multiples of his home rate, another found fairways and greens sparse, and a milder note reported greens running slow after heavy rain. Rain appears often enough in the review language to be worth planning around. A further thread comes from golfers who have played it for years and feel it has slipped, with one saying it was much better years ago and another suggesting it be dropped from future packages. Set against that volume of positive feedback, the fair reading is a well run course with wide appeal and greens that do not always match the setting.

First time at WW. Greens were a bit slow after some much needed rain but otherwise a great course.
Course was in great condition and the staff was very helpful.
Great course. Busy but very laid back. Highly recommend
Food truck was not open for our “turn” as we were told it would be. Could have bought some food to bring with us
This course was just OK - we would suggest you not include it in future packages.
I liked Wild wing. Driving range was just OK. Course conditions were great.
Only drawback was the hummingbird course is very poor condition
had best time ever, great club house, course was in excellent condition i'd recommend this course highly, friendly staff
Great back nine
This course we played several times due to replays after King's North and Avocet. The pro shop and course guys were great and we had a fun time. Only negative was 3-5 of the greens were in rough shape. Overall very fun experience and when you combine it to its vicinity to other courses, easy replay availability, it was well worth it.
This course probably had the least amount of sand and water than the other 3 courses we played. Having said that it still has plenty of bunkers and water to keep you challenged. Some of the green were not in the best shape but I understand they will be closing down from sometime in May to mid to late September to revamp the course. Still it was nice playing a course like this one, that isn’t at least yet, totally surrounded by houses on all the fairways. We’d definitely like to revisit this course again after they finish the updates.
Absolutely beautiful course!! The course was. In beautiful shape.
Best course LOVED IT!
Good folks at the bag drop, friendly starter. Purse in really good shape.
pretty good for the time of year and the weather that y'all have had
one of best courses i've played. A beautiful course. Food was excellent as well.
Greens need work
Loved this course. It was our first time playing it in many years.
The starter on Saturday evening was a complete A-hole. He's a retired cop and he wanted us to give him a tip ( shake down) to stay out there and play. I was 5:00 and he said if we paid him we could keep playing and if not just finish the hole and bring it in.
Reply from the courseHi Robert...it's Jeff Diehl, your Golfmaster, and I am sorry read what happened on Saturday. I do have a question before I send your comments off to the managers at the course. David Lilly's package had you playing Kiongs North on Saturday, but your comments were referencing Wild Wing, which was scheduled for Friday. Which course did you have this bad experience at? We take things like this seriously
Great golf course!Lots of fun.
Well maintained
Great Golf Course loved it
Good course but it rain that day.
Well worth the money
Greens had some brown spots
Course was in great shape,,folks were very nice and friendly,,super time
Best course all week. Had a great time.
I really enjoyed playing this course and it was in great condition.
Worst greens I have ever seen. When paying 4 times what I pay in Ohio I expected a professional course. I wouldn't recommend this course greens we like playing on a gravel road.
They have lost their greens, you should have been aware of that and not book us there
Course is beautiful but greens were trash. Bad groundskeeper.
Overall in very nice condition
Ended up eating at the clubhouse, best decision we made! The course was in great shape, except the greens didn't roll well at all. Worst of all courses we played.
enjoyed the course , great shape 5. Greens very good 4.5
Greens really slow.
Great course and good speed to get through. Great condition.
Was in great shape
Not very memorable. Great weather
Course was great, enjoyed it.
fairways little sparce,green same
Course not in good shape. Staff was friendly. Only issue was they allowed a 2some ahead and then were were a 2some and very slow play. Painfully slow.
greens in tough shape but a nice course
Enjoyed the course. Expect to play it again next year
Got rain checks
Great course that unfortunately lost some of its greens. They were about half way back when we played in Mid October. Would have been nice to know from Todd that the greens were in rough shape.
Greens were a mess and at the bag dropthe guys didn't even bother helping us with our bags
Bad greens, poor fairways. Nice overall layout. Needs work. Was agreat course in the past.
Greens were in bad shape and after the round we found out they had had some type of disease and will be replaced.
not good at at and booze very expensive LOL
The greens were atrocious and we should have been informed of this when booking. Apparently they lost their greens to a worm infestation a couple of months ago and will be replacing all of them in 1Q next year. I felt paying full price for this course was a rip off.
Traps, fairways and tee boxes were in great shape However, the grass on all of the greens was not in good condition and was not expected. Not sure if it was the type of grass, or if it was a disease that caused the issue.
The course had lost their greens earlier in the summer and we were not informed of this. The greens were visibly redone and you could tell they were still having problems with them so we putted over patches of dead grass, replanted grass and verticut greens. Not the best experience on a course we have added to our rotation the last handful of years
Greens were in bad shape and after we played we found out that they had had some type of disease and are going to be repaired after the season ends.
Too hard for my handicap
Great course Wide fairways
got rained out but the people were great a provided rainchecks,, will book it next year
Greens where horrible
